How to open a DWG file online

  1. Choose the file. Drag a .dwg or .dxf file onto the box above or click “Choose a file”. It works the same with a drawing you've just downloaded from an email.
  2. Wait a few seconds. We convert the drawing on our server in Germany. Most files are ready in under ten seconds.
  3. Look around. Zoom with the mouse wheel or by pinching, drag to pan, and double-click to see the whole drawing again. Turn layers on and off to find what you need.

What you'll see

The viewer shows the model space of the drawing the way its author drew it: lines, polylines, arcs and circles, single-line and multiline text, dimensions, hatches and solid fills, blocks and dashed linetypes, all in the layer colours stored in the file. You can also measure the distance between two points and print the drawing to scale or save it as a PDF.

Layers

See every layer with its colour and number of objects. Hide the ones you don't need, or leave just one on.

Sharp at any zoom

The drawing is vector, not a picture, so even the smallest detail stays crisp. The cursor coordinates are shown below the drawing.

On any device

Nothing to install. The viewer runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebook, Android and iPhone.

What is a DWG file?

DWG is the file format of AutoCAD and many other CAD programs used by architects, engineers, designers and manufacturers. A DWG file holds a precise vector drawing: a floor plan, a machine part, a profile cross-section or a site plan. Without CAD software you usually can't open it, and that's exactly what this DWG viewer is for. DXF is a related, open exchange format, and the viewer opens DXF files too.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DWG viewer really free?

Yes. Viewing DWG and DXF files is free and needs no account. You can open up to 30 files a day.

Which DWG versions can I open?

DWG files from R13 (1994) up to the 2018 format, which current CAD programs still save in, plus DXF files in text and binary form. If an old or unusual file won't open, save it as DXF and try again.

Do I need to install anything or sign up?

No. The viewer works in your browser, with no plug-in, app or account.

Can I edit the drawing?

Not in the free viewer, but you can measure distances and print the drawing to scale. Editing, dimensioning and saving drawings come with the CadTab app, which is now in a free beta by invitation. Join the waitlist below to get yours.

Why don't I see everything that's in the file?

The viewer shows model space. Drawings placed only on layouts (paper space), raster images and 3D solids aren't shown yet. If something is missing, the bar above the drawing lists the object types that were left out.

How big can the file be?

Up to 20 MB. Very large drawings with hundreds of thousands of objects may be too heavy for the free viewer.
